A Long Overdue Update

Friday, February 6, 2015

I'll be honest: In the past 5-6 years, I have been spending far more time working at getting my business off the ground than working on or thinking about APRS/CE.

And frankly, after the iPhone was released in 2007, the writing was on the wall for Windows CE and all of it's various incarnations.

Yes, it still exists in some form, but I have to run a Windows XP virtual machine in order to get the development tools work correctly. And I have to dig out an old device, cajole it into working with ActiveSync via a VM, face north, say the magic word, click my heels, and then maybe I would be able to test whatever I had just built.

I know people still use APRS/CE, and I really appreciate the fact that people have found it so useful over the years, but there's no feasible way for me to put any more development effort into it.

The most important part of this missive:

APRS/CE is now free of charge!

I'm looking into the possibility of putting the map editor up on GitHub to let the community do with it what they find useful.

If not GitHub, I may upload it here as a "perpetual beta". (Google does it, why not me?)

No promises on timeframe, either way.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has given me support, money and/or encouragement over the years. It is greatly appreciated.
